Lyttelton Harbour was formed 11 million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and the sea filled its crater.

The harbour, Te Whakaraupo the harbour of bullrush weeds, has been home for the Maori for about 1000 years and was first sighted by the Europeans in 1770 on Captain Cook's first voyage to New Zealand in the Endevour.

Lyttelton is based just 9 km southeast of Christchurch. It is a quaint township perched on the hillside overlooking the harbour.

Public transport is available from Christchurch to Lyttelton on the No. 28 bus from Cathedral Square and is just a 15 minute drive away from the centre of Christchurch

Travelling to Lyttelton is an adventure. One has to pass through a long tunnel built in 1964, which cuts through the Port Hills in its destiny to Lyttelton.
